Vice Presidential Candidates Debate Abortion

Last night, the vice presidential candidates, Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine, debated each other at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.

In a rare moment on the national stage, they went toe to toe on abortion. The difference was striking. Despite his claim to be a good Catholic, Kaine defended the murder of babies, even in the third trimester.

“We really feel like you should live fully and with enthusiasm the commands of your faith, but it is not the role of the public servant to mandate that for everybody else.  So let’s talk about abortion and choice.  We support Roe v. Wade. We support the constitutional right of American women to consult their own conscience, their own supportive partner, their own minister, but then make their own decision about pregnancy.  That’s something we trust American women to do that.  Governor Pence wants to repeal Roe v. Wade.  He said he wants to put it on the ash heap of history.”

By contrast, Pence’s commitment to the pro-life cause flows out of his salvation as a college freshman.

“For me, the sanctity of life proceeds out of the belief, that ancient principle, where God says, ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.’  What I can’t understand is with Hillary Clinton, and now Senator Kaine at her side, is to support or practice partial-birth abortion. The very idea that a child that is almost born into the world could still have their life taken from them is just anathema to me.  I can’t conscience about a party that supports that.  Hillary Clinton wants to repeal the long-standing provision in the law where we said we wouldn’t use taxpayer dollars to fund abortion.  For me, my faith informs my life.  But it all, for me, begins with cherishing the dignity, the worth, the value of every human life.”

Dr. Richard Land on Voting for Trump

Dr. Richard Land, President of Southern Evangelical Seminary [www.ses.edu] is a member of Trump’s evangelical advisory board, and he told The World View of the consequences of a Clinton presidency.

“What we’re looking at here is an election that could decide the fate of the country for the next 40 years.  If Mrs. Clinton is elected, it’ll be four more years of Obama, only worse.   Political scientists will tell you that if you want to fundamentally change the United States federal government, you need 12 years.  Eight years won’t do it, you gotta have 12.  If you have Mrs. Clinton, you will have 12. And the cake will be baked.  At the end of four years of Mrs. Clinton, if we turn her out of office in four years, the damage will have been done. We will have a federal judiciary that will be extremely hostile to traditional understandings of marriage, traditional understandings of religious freedom for 30-40 more years. And we will have permanently circumscribed our economic prospects and we will have condemned our children and grandchildren to living lives with a much lower living standards than the ones we have now. If Mr. Trump wins, if he doesn’t turn out as good as we had liked him to be, in four years, we will have a do-over.  We can change direction.  But if Mrs. Clinton wins, the cake is baked. Let’s just hope that our goose isn’t cooked.”

Dr. Land spoke to the concern that neither Trump nor Clinton is a biblically qualified civil magistrate.

“I’m totally aware that there are those who say, ‘Well, I just can’t vote for either one of them. Neither Mrs. Clinton nor Mr. Trump are biblically qualified to be a civil magistrate.  Well, I’m assuming that if you’re a mature American, you have already voted for people who didn’t fit what we would consider to have the ideal biblical qualifications for a civil magistrate.  We have a particular challenge this year in that I think we have two particularly flawed candidates.  But I think that to say, ‘Well I think I just can’t vote for either one of them, I’m going to wash my hands or I’m just going to write in somebody or vote for one of the minor party candidates’ — is what I call ‘The Pontius Pilate Option’ where you try to bring a pail of water as if that will absolve you of the responsibility.  We have to understand the consequences of our actions.”

Judge Roy Moore Suspended

Joe Godfrey, Executive Director of Alabama Citizens Action Program, spoke to The World View about the suspension of Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore who dared to affirm traditional marriage in the face of the Obergefell Supreme Court decision last June.

“I am not surprised by the suspension of Judge Moore, but I’m very disappointed because I feel that it was an attack on religious liberty in America.  I admire Judge Moore for his stance — that marriage is between one man and one woman – because, in this case particularly, he was standing on constitutional law.”

Godfrey is hopeful that Chief Justice Moore will be exonerated and restored to his former position by his former colleagues.

“It is my hope that the Alabama State Supreme Court will overturn the decision of the Court of the Judiciary.   But my sense of the likelihood of that happening is based on the fact that in the past the court has demonstrated that it is a very conservative court, and very careful to adhere to the state constitution and the Constitution of the United States.  I believe that it’s very possible they could overturn the Court of Judiciary’s decision.”

If the Alabama Supreme Court fails to restore Judge Moore, he will remain suspended without pay through January, 2019, the remainder of his term.

Pakistani Man Shoots 18-Year-Old Sister After She Marries Christian

A Muslim Pakistani man claims he had “no choice” but to shoot his 18-year-old sister to death after she married a Christian man.  The Associated Press has released a chilling video from a jailhouse interview in which 24-year-old Mubeen Rajhu, his hands in shackles, explained that he walked into the kitchen of his family’s home, fired a single shot into his sister Tasleem’s head as his mother and another sister looking on.  In the brother’s mind, she had brought shame on the family and it was his duty to kill her to protect their honor.

Honor killings have been on the rise in Pakistan and women are victims, by far, more than men. In 2015, the number of honor killings rose for the third straight year with 1,184 killed. Of that total, 1,096 of the victims were women.
