Catholic Vote Made a Big Difference for Trump’s Presidential Victory
Richard Viguerie, the conservative pioneer of political direct mail, told The World View that it was the Catholics who elected Donald Trump.
“The Catholic vote normally goes Democrat. In 2012, Romney lost the Catholic vote by 4 points. He got 48 percent to Obama’s 52 percent. In this most recent election, Trump outpolled Clinton 52-45%. That’s an 11-point increase in the Catholic vote for the Republican Party candidate for this election versus four years ago. A high percent of the voters in the battleground states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Ohio are Catholic. So that 11-point switch was huge! In an election this close, many issues can claim to be the decisive one, but on a short list you’d have to put the Catholic vote moving towards Trump as making a major difference.”
Viguerie told The World View that he’s encouraged to see groups like Priests for Life and Catholic Vote demonstrate real leadership at the grassroots level.
“The Left has been doing that for quite some time. Now conservatives are beginning to operate independent of the Republican Party in what I call Third Force organization, not Third Party, but Third Force. The Left has had so much success with that with same-sex organizations, unions, environmental groups. And now you’re seeing conservatives at the grassroots, without coordinating with anybody, just providing leadership on their own. And contributed significantly to the Republican victory.”
